Summer Program: Session Three Recap
Teenz In The City had an awesome 3rd week of our summer program! Our members are developing really nice friendships with each other, working on their social skills, and increasing their knowledge and confidence while navigating New York City.
During week 3, the group focused on the important theme of travel training. Each morning, our members utilized Moovit and Google Maps in order to complete a travel training worksheet and determine the best travel route to our destination. Each day, we assigned a group member to be the leader to and from session. This leadership role was really important in helping all members serve as a leader in the group and helped increase their knowledge and understanding as well as their confidence and assertive skills.
During week 3, our group members had a very exciting week! On Monday, our members visited The Museum of Moving Image in Queens and learned about the history, technique, and technology of film, television and digital media. Our members' favorite part of the museum was recording their own voices for various movie parts and hearing them live! They also really enjoyed their time playing in the arcade room, playing each other in classic games including Mrs. Pacman. On Tuesday, the group had the opportunity to visit Biscuits and Bath doggy day care in Midtown Manhattan. The opportunity had the opportunity to hear from the location manager and learn more about their Buddy Program, a unique volunteer opportunity for animal lovers. Biscuits and Bath accepts interested individuals with a passion for animals and opportunity to volunteer at one of their 10 locations in Manhattan. Please inquire within for more information on this fantastic opportunity. After Biscuits and Bath, the group headed over to Cool Mess ice cream where they were able to create their own desserts, choosing their own flavor and mix in toppings! It was delicious way to cool down on this hot summer day! On Wednesday, the group traveled to The Central Park Zoo where they were able to see awesome animals right in our own backyard! We were impressed how much prior knowledge our members had and how well they did teaching each other about the different animals. On Thursday, the group headed to Pier 25 for a friendly game of mini golf and picnic lunch. On Friday, for our final outing of the week, our members were given the opportunity for a members’ choice outing to conclude the session. Our members voted on going to Ellen’s Stardust Diner, a classic member favorite. Our members enjoyed listening to the classic show tunes while dining on American food. This week was the perfect combination of learning, fun, friendship and delicious food! We are looking forward to session 4, which starts Monday.
