It's a Bird, It's a Plane...It's Superman!
Back by popular demand, the middle school boys group enjoyed another exciting outing at St. Mark’s Comics. While it would have been convenient to fly there like Superman would, we had to use the Moovit app to find the most efficient travel route and took the 6 train downtown to Astor Place. On our way to the comic store, group members engaged in reciprocal conversation about their favorite comics and superheroes. They also discussed what comics they would like to buy at the store such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Avengers and Star Wars. When we arrived, the group explored the comic store and found several comics they were interested in. They used their advocating skills to ask for help and found out a great deal of interesting information from the people who worked there. Each member planned out a budget for the comic store in order to make sure they had enough money to buy a comic as well as get dessert after. With some help from the group facilitators, members displayed great money management skills and each bought a comic or item that was within their budget. The group went to 10 Below for a delicious dessert where they had the ability to choose their own ice cream and toppings and watch it being made from scratch right in front of them. While the group ate their ice cream, we spoke about what we liked about the comic store. Each group member was excited for their new comic or souvenir. On the way back to Bread and Butter, the group chose to take a different route. We took the m101 Limited bus uptown and discussed how the bus works as well as the difference between limited and local. During the bus ride, we were informed that there was a fair on 3rd avenue, so the bus had to go a different way. This was a teachable moment because in the city, there are often delays and changes when taking public transportation. Group members had to be patient and we discussed what would happen if we were late returning to Bread and Butter. The group had a wonderful time at St Mark’s Comics and 10 below and we hope to return again in the future.
