S'mores please? Max Brenner: A Chocolate Lover's Dream Come True

This past weekend, the girls group had a sweet session at Max Brenner's Chocolate in Union Square. Before departing, our members researched the most efficient route to take us to our destination. We decided that walking to the 4,5 express train station would be both the quickest and most efficient way to get to Union Square. Upon arrival to the restaurant, we had one of our members check in with the hostess. This is one of the important ways in which our members can work to increase their comfort communicating with others in the community as well as practice their self-advocacy skills. When we sat down, it was evident that our members loved looking at the menu, especially showing a great interest in the sweets and dessert section. They had everything from premium hot chocolate, chocolate pizza, chocolate pasta, s'mores as well as our member favorites of pizza and chicken fingers. We reminded members the importance of selecting a lunch item that was within their budget. The girls decided it would be best to order two desserts for the table to share, in order to save money, yet still be able to sample the sweet delicious treats that Max Brenner is known for. As we waited for our meals, the girls engaged in an important group conversation on female empowerment, self-advocacy and being assertive. The girls each took turns sharing personal experiences of challenging social situations that they have been through. The girls then each role-played various ways they could be assertive during these challenging social situations, in particular with members of the opposite sex. We where impressed by our members willingness to share and partake in such an important and serious discussion. We will continue to support our members in processing the challenging years of adolescence and navigating what it is like to be a young woman in today's complex society.
